Our new baby

Our new baby
Originally uploaded by Mark Lawrence.
Yes, we have a new baby in our family. Shelley, my partner, gave birth at our home on Tuesday 2 May, at 7.28 pm, after labouring through the day.
Shelley had her two independent midwives, Jenny and Nicola, with her through most of her labour over the day and right through the crucial time. They were brilliant! No shift changes in hospital, and we knew who we were going to deal with through the whole thing.

Shelley and baby are both doing extremely well.

He weighed 3.92 kgs (or 8lbs 10.5 oz) at birth. We haven't decided on a name yet, but we're over the moon about him.

So, I hope this is a good enough excuse for not blogging very much this past week, and in the weeks to come!

Update: Here is a photograph* from the birth – moments after he was born into the water, we placed our newborn on Shelley's chest – skin to skin.

Congratulations again.

"David" is a good power name. Or perhaps "Bruce"?

Hi Guys,

Congratulations!!!!

It's fantastic news that mother, baby and father are all safe and sound. The little critter looks beautiful.

We have constantly been wondering how everything was going.

A big hug for you all.

Andrew

Hey another home birther! That's excellent, congratulations! My wife and I opted for a home birth as well and have never regretted it. There's something so much more special, relaxing and memorable about bringing a child into the world in a warm and caring environment at home than the clinical all-white aura of your typical hospital. Don't get me wrong, they're invaluable during an emergency; but your average birth is a celebration, not an emergency.

It's also nice to be able to point to the corner of the loungeroom and say to your child: "You were born there."

Hi Mike, I couldn't agree more about home birth. It was incredible. I assume you and your partner had an amazing experience too.

I work in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation, and colleagues explain to me that in some communities the birth 'spot' is intricately linked to 'country' – to the point that one joked that her baby relative could claim his grandmother's bathroom as his 'country' because he was born there unexpectedly!
